Testing Boolean Builders

You often hear about the difficulties of using Boolean for candidate searches, right? Well, let me share a little secret. 🤫

Believe it or not, I don't write my Boolean searches from the ground up. 😯

Yes, even as a self-confessed Boolean enthusiast, I have a tech tool that handles about 95% of the grunt work for me.

Look the reality is, building an exceptional search by hand takes HOURS. This is time I don't have to give. So I lean on smart technology to help me build the best search and find the best candidates faster.

I might be biased because we developed it, but I wanted to see how it stacks up against other Boolean builders. So, I ran a little experiment with 6 different Boolean builders, feeding each the same criteria.

• Taylr's Generator, added industry experience into the mix: "Regional EHS Specialist" AND "Telecoms industry experience" AND (NMSD OR NEBOSH OR "Environmental Qualification" OR IEMA)

• HireEz, offered a simpler, less structured approach: ("Regional EHS Specialist") NMSD nebosh ENVIOR IEMA telecoms

• LinkedIn Prospect, was more company-specific: (title:"REGIONAL EHS SPECIALIST")(company:ERICSSON)(NMSD OR NEBOSH OR " Environmental Qualification" OR " IEMA" OR " Telecoms")

• ChatGPT 4, expanded on job titles and sectors, adding more depth: ("Regional EHS Specialist" OR "EHS Specialist" OR "Environmental Health and Safety Specialist") AND (NMSD OR NEBOSH OR "environmental qualification" OR IEMA) AND ("Telecoms" OR "Telecommunications" OR "Telecom Industry") AND ("Health and Safety" OR "HSE" OR "Safety Specialist" OR "Safety Officer")

But the real eye-opener was the final platform, Tooled Up Raccoons – the detail and variation it captured was impressive!

This test highlighted why some recruiters feel that Boolean searches yield little to no new results. The first four builders regurgitated keywords, while the fifth got closer to what I was looking for. But the sixth? It was a game-changer. Not only did it capture the key information presented, but also relevant alterantives. It even took into account the industry states!

What was interesting is the other 5 builders, built the string and then stopped there. With solution 6 you were able to edit, it then gave new word suggestions, let me take elements of the search to run different combinations and so much more.
